Local Authority Appointed

Register of Interests: None

I became a governor at Rendlesham in October 2011 and was proud to be elected Chair of Governors in November 2013. I am a local authority governor. I am the governor responsible for Safeguarding and SEN. I am married with two grown-up children and three wonderful grandsons, two of whom are primary school age and one is at nursery.   I was born and grew up in Liverpool and worked as a Chartered Librarian until I retired. As a family we lived in Derbyshire for a while and then Operations Manager for that service.  I loved working in schools all around the county, helping children learn and discover the world moved to Abu Dhabi for a couple of years, we then lived in Saudi Arabia until finally settling in Suffolk in 1982. I became a High School Librarian and worked at a small rural High School in Suffolk and then at a much larger High school in Ipswich. After that I worked as an Advisory Librarian for the County Schools Library Service ending up as around them through books and the ever widening range of media at their fingertips. When I retired I was approached to become a school governor and jumped at the chance to continue working in education especially in the setting of Rendlesham Primary School. Out of school I enjoy volunteering for the National Trust at Sutton Hoo. Meeting the visitors and telling them the story of the site is very special and great fun. I love having the time to meet and socialise with friends. It is a great pleasure to work on my garden and enjoy all that life in the beautiful county of Suffolk has to offer. I enjoy the theatre, music and of course reading. I also write when time allows. My husband and I love travelling, we have spent many holidays in France and much further afield. It is a real privilege to be involved in such a good school as Rendlesham, to watch it grow and develop and to be involved with children who are so eager to learn.

As the Head Teacher of Rendlesham school I am very proud of the opportunities we offer our pupils and staff. I have been in post since April 2013 having completed my NPQH in September 2012. I have a joint degree in Early Childhood studies and Literary Studies. I have a passion for maths and enjoy changing attitudes towards the subject in all age groups. I am a proud mother and wife and treasure my close relationship with my family.

I am proud to admit that I have been at Rendlesham Primary since it opened back in 2006. From the beginning I have been a class teacher and also work as the SENCo too. I was appointed as the Deputy Head Teacher in September 2013 and it is a role that I very much enjoy. No two days are the same and I am posed with different challenges daily. I currently spend a day and half in the classroom and the rest of the week is dedicated to my SEN and management roles. I am passionate about all elements of my job and love that I get to work with amazing children and families. As a Rendlesham resident I love being part of a growing community and enjoy many activities out of school. I am an officer in the Boys Brigade at Wickham Market and I am part of the Jubilee Show committee in the village. In my spare time I like to bury my head in a book, watch films, walk along the beach and spend time with my family and friends.

Karen Howard

 Committees:  Teaching and Learning

Register of Interests: None

My name is Karen Howard and I am a teacher governor. I started teaching at Rendlesham Primary School in 2008 and I also live in Rendlesham too. I decided to become a governor here as I am very passionate about the school. I currently have not taken the leadership route but I wanted to involve myself in a different aspect of school life; being a Governor is the perfect solution! It is a very interesting way to be involved in the running of the school and be part of a fabulous team of people that come from very varied backgrounds and who all want the best for our school.

Lucy Porteous

Governor

Co-opted

Chair of Hearings

Appointed: 07 April 2014, Term of office: 4 years

 Committees: Hearing; Personnel;  Premises

Register of Interests: None

I joined the governor team in March 2014 and I am a Co-opted Governor. I am married to Mark, a mum of one, step mum to two, and my son is currently in Year 4 at Rendlesham Primary School.  I grew up and spent my younger adult years in Surrey and the surrounding home counties, and moved to Suffolk in 2009. We moved to Rendlesham in January 2014 and quickly embraced the strong sense of community spirit and diverse, friendly families that live here. This is very much echoed throughout the ethos of the school and how the staff work so hard to teach and nurture our next generation(s). I work full time at Suffolk Police at Martlesham Police Headquarters employed in a civilian post. I have been in the police for 6 years and my current role is a Staff Officer (Business development) for the Head of Protective Services. Previous experience includes working within various Local Government organisations for over 15 years all centred around business and organisational management. My hobbies include owning oversized animals and we have a 7 stone extra-large soppy white German Shepherd and two Maine Coon cats (for those who don’t know the breed, they can grow to a fair size!). I nearly forgot to mention my tank full of tropical fish too!!  In my spare time I love to get out into the garden and grow our own fruit and vegetables, and of course spend time with family and friends. As a governor I bring to the team business, project management and organisational skills.

Benjamin Bappu

Governor

Chair of Finance

Co-opted

Appointed: 11 February 2015, Term of office: 4 years

Committees: Finance

Register of Interests: None

I am originally from Singapore and came to England in 1998 to pursue my post graduate degree. After graduation I joined a telecommunications company in 2000 and have lived in Suffolk ever since. I currently hold the position as Head of Business Development in the company. Prior to that I served the armed forces for two years after my graduation in Singapore.  I was naturalized as a British Citizen in 2007. I got married in 2008 to Edna (Jassmine) and we have a boy and a girl, both at Rendlesham primary school.  We now live in Rendlesham too. As a Governor, I believe I have essential skills through my work experience to make positive and robust improvements to Rendlesham Primary School. I am always open to suggestions and new ideas.

Chris Ray

Associate Governor

Co-opted

Appointed:17 Nov 2016, Term of office: 1 Year

Committees: None

Register of Interests: None

I was delighted to be asked by Jean and Debbie to take up the role of Associate Governor to lend assistance on special projects and use the experiences I have gained having recently completed 12 years as Chair of Estates at an Academy Trust secondary school in London. I was born and grew up in North London attending Minchenden Grammar school which has long gone but I remain active as a Trustee and Vice President of the old pupils association. Education is a lifelong experience and it starts at a very early age. I wish to help Rendlesham achieve all of its goals.

I am, by profession, a Chartered Surveyor specialising in resolving valuation disputes and, by accident, a farmer on a very small scale. I bought a farm from the prison service over ten years ago, and my wife, dog and I have recently completed our holiday self-catering accommodation on site and moved permanently to Shingle Street. Our children have graduated from Loughborough and Sussex Universities.

I have lived in Rendlesham since 2009 with my wife and more recently two young children. My eldest has just started reception at Rendlesham Primary School creating a perfect opportunity for me to consider a governors post.
I started teaching in Suffolk eight years ago and I am currently Subject Leader for Mathematics and Numeracy at Saxmundham Free School. As part of my role I am responsible for student progress and outcomes so have a range of experiences to bring to the governing body. When I am not at school I enjoy cycling, swimming and spending time with my family.

I joined the governing body of Rendlesham Primary School in early 2013 as a parent governor and it's been a fantastic experience being involved with the school at such an exciting time. There's been a transitional period in which the school has seen a lot of changes but the team of teaching staff have ensured the high standards expected from parents and themselves have been maintained exceptionally well. Being part of the governing body providing the support and guidance for the school has been hugely rewarding and a privilege.    I've lived in Rendlesham for four years and have four young children, two of which are in the school and one in nursery and it's great to have the first-hand knowledge that the school is dedicated to making my children's education as important as it is to me whilst giving them a safe, fun environment in which they create the desire to learn.    Aside from a busy family life I run an estate agency business in the area and enjoy cooking, music and sports.
